HOLYCRIT MAKES COMEBACK IN STUNNING FASHION
When night fell during the wee hours of 3rd December, bike blinkies and wheels started rolling their way to the National Stadium to enter what was the much anticipated 9th edition of HolyCrit 2016.
You may find this race familiar, as it made headlines 2 years ago when organising duo Zulkifli Awab and Eric Khoo were arrested for organising the event without the relevant permits and involved the use of fixed-gear bicycles that come without brakes.
The race, which debuted in September 2013, was previously held about once a month at various venues around Singapore.
The HolyCrit race has finally received the green light from the authorities to stage its comeback with the help of the Singapore Cycling Federation (SCF). This time round, the race has gotten the required permits and approvals from the relevant authorities such as the Land Transport Authority and Traffic Police.
Well, not just official approval was enquired. A huge boost of 20 sponsors to cover the costs of running the event and prizes made this edition the largest ever.
A mega crowd showed up to lend their fervent support for the riders and organisers alike. Something close to 400 spectators were present to cheer on the 30 mountain bike participants and 60 fixed-gear riders.
It was definitely a night to remember, the spirit of togetherness was evident with riders and spectators all in good spirits matched by a wonderful atmosphere altogether.
Well, what’s next for the organising team? Only time will tell, but the future definitely looks bright with more local races on the up.
